Writing about my gaming journey (game acquisitions, completions, reviews, etc) and anything else that strikes my fancy. Don't worry, my backlog is always growing so there will never be a shortage of things to talk about.
Is this the gaming I’ve missed while I’ve been away? I
should play video games more often! In all seriousness, Expedition 33 continues
to be a phenomenal game and I’m glad I was able to make the time to play it. It
does make me worried that other games will pale in comparison, but I’ll cross
that bridge when I get to it. Anyway, on to acquisitions!
Game Acquisitions
I had a
couple different purchases last week. The first was Fanatical’s cheapest bundle
offering with five games for $3. A couple of the games look pretty good, a
couple look OK, and there might be a stinker. However, for $3, I’m willing to
take the gamble. I also purchased the Castlevania Advance Collection in my
quest to play every Castlevania game. The rest of the games were freebies.

I’m putting so much time into Clair
Obscur: Expedition 33 it’s not even funny. I haven’t gamed this much in months
and it feels great. I love this game so much, I’m enjoying every session so
far. For context, I defeated Renoir and the Paintress and am currently roaming around in Act III checking out anywhere I haven’t been to yet. It’s been fun trying out some of the optional bosses and red danger areas I didn’t think I was supposed to go to yet. I want to see as much as possible before heading back to Lumière to face the real Renoir. Check out my playthrough! Like last week, I’ll link to one video as well as the playlist where you can find the whole let’s play. Also a reminder that my Tales of Phantasia videos are still trickling out despite finishing the game already. Same deal with those, I’ll link to one video and the playlist. The finale is still coming November 5th!
TV/Movie Recaps
Here is everything I watched last week:
·Splinter Cell: Deathwatch Season 1 Episodes 5-8
(all caught up, show ongoing)
·Gen V Season 2 Episodes 1-4 (still watching,
show ongoing?)
·Riddick
Splinter Cell: Deathwatch has been, well...watched. It was
OK, nothing special. It definitely didn’t fill the Splinter Cell-shaped hole in
my life that a new game would. Gen V is just as over the top and gory as ever
to the point where it makes it hard to watch sometimes. Also, the political
landscape following so closely to the real world makes it hard to watch in
other ways. I had the same complaint with the latest season of The Boys. If
they couldn’t find a way to pivot, it’s probably for the best it’s ending after
its next season. Even so, I still enjoyed my time with it. The Riddick movie
was a nice return to the simplicity of Pitch Black. Besides the intro and
outro, the whole movie took place on one planet with Riddick just trying to survive.
It did seem like they tried to set up a more wacky sequel going back to the
weird space death cult from the last movie so we’ll see if that ever goes
anywhere.
Conclusion/Upcoming
I’m deep into Expedition 33 and I think I can safely say
this is the best game I’ve played in years. Assuming it stays at the quality
it’s been at so far, it’s getting a 10/10 from me. I don’t think I’ve ever
played a game that is both more cinematic and has a fun and engaging combat
system as this one does. It absolutely lives up to the hype and will be my
GOTY. I still haven’t finished it though so I don’t want to be premature with a
review. Just felt like gushing I suppose.
My plan for next week is to finish up Gen V and start my
next show which will hopefully finally being those old anime I talked about a
couple weeks back. Now that the Riddick series is done, I’m moving on to 28
Years Later. I’m not really a horror movie guy but I’ve seen the other entries
so I might as well keep going with this one. On the gaming front, I’m probably
not going to get any co-op gaming in as my friend picked up some extra shifts.
I will, however, absolutely be continuing my Expedition 33 playthrough. I don’t
want it to end 😭 Anyway, that’s all for now. My next post
will be the October monthly. Thanks for reading!
I never thought I’d see the day, but Tales of Phantasia has
finally been completed. It only took six months 😅 I’m just grateful to
still have a friend as an adult that gave so much of his time to play through
such a long game with me. My full review is in the game review section below
but TLDR; I thought it was a great old-school RPG that’s missing some modern
QOL features. I also had another big week for acquisitions. Let’s start with
that first as usual.
Game Acquisitions
I ended up
getting the full seven-pack of Fanatical’s Build Your Own Story Rich Bundle which I rarely do. I was initially
going to ignore the bundle altogether, but then I saw Just a To the Moon Series
Beach Episode in it which was in my wishlist. I’m also a sucker for a good
story in games as I’ve mentioned before and there were enough well-reviewed
games here to spring for the highest tier. I also bought Chained Echoes which I
had been waiting to hit $10 since release and it finally hit that price point
last week. I used my Steam wallet credit on it though which is why the money
spent doesn’t reflect that purchase. The rest of the games were freebies.
Amazon is giving away a lot of spooky games this month for Halloween so you’ll
see a few more in my acquisitions over the next couple of posts.

You can ignore the Monster Camp entry. I
was just getting the game set up and reading through collectible stuff. Anyway,
Tales of Phantasia has been completed in yet another marathon six-hour session
and got a decent amount of Expedition 33 in too. This is despite taking a few
days off afterward to edit the videos, write this blog post, and catch up on
some sleep. In Tales of Phantasia, we defeated Origin to obtain the last piece of the tria, found Dhaos’ castle, fought through way too many floors, and defeated the big guy himself for the final time. In Expedition 33, I completed Act I which unfortunately meant the end of dear Gustave and the introduction of Verso. I also unlocked the ability to swim which really opened up the world map more. After exploring the various islands to see what I can find, I continued to the main quest in the Forgotten Battlefield. After fighting through there, I picked up the last party member. Now I'm just exploring the new area before heading to the next main story quest. Check out my playthroughs! Like last week, there are way too many parts to embed here, and they’re being spaced out to just an hour a day on my channel so not everything is public yet. I’ll drop one episode of each game here and link to the playlists where you can find the rest as they become available. The Tales of Phantasia finale is scheduled to go up November 5th.
Game Reviews
Tales of Phantasia
Tales of Phantasia
is the first game in a long running series of JRPGs published by Bandai Namco.
It follows a group of young heroes whose world is threatened by a powerful
being known as Dhaos. After losing their first battle against him, the main
character Cless is sent back to the past before Dhaos was considered
all-powerful to recruit the aforementioned heroes and learn the magic needed to
stop him once and for all.
In contrast to most
RPGs of the time (the original game came out on the SNES in 1995, although I
played the PS1 remake released in 1998), the combat is played out in real-time
instead of being turn-based. I’m normally more of a turn-based fan so I was initially
hesitant about the combat system, but I quickly found that my fears were
unfounded. The combat feels very good in this game, especially with a co-op
partner to help out instead of relying exclusively on the AI. Every character
has a basic slash and thrust attack, as well as being able to assign four
spells or abilities known in this series as artes. These can range wildly from
a simple upward sword thrust to summoning a fire spirit to a devastating meteor
storm. For the AI party members, you can deselect artes you don’t want them to
use as well as alter their behavior to be more aggressive, defensive, or focus
on support or healing. You can also pause the battle to select specific artes
you want them to perform or use items. It was all very intimidating at first,
but you really get in the groove with it after a while. After defeating the
first boss at the end of the first dungeon in the jail cells, I felt more
confident in my ability to make it through the game.
Besides the
real-time combat, the rest of the game has all the standard RPG tropes that
were long established before even this came out. You wander from town to town
fighting monsters along the way, buy items and equipment from various shops,
talk to NPCs to get quests, then fight through a dungeon to get something
needed to advance the story and repeat. This might sound like I’m knocking on
the game, but this flow is one of the things I like most about RPGs. The story
is serviceable, and the villain is pretty one note until the very end. The
characters are a highlight though, and the skits you can watch with them after
every story beat were always enjoyable.
My biggest problems
with this game probably just come down to age. There were many modern
conveniences that are missing which is understandable since it’s a game from
the 90s. There is no quest log, so good luck trying to remember everything
every NPC told you unless you want to write it down. There is a world map that
marks your location and the major towns which is nice, but there is no
indication of where you’re supposed to go on it. There is no minimap and it’s
very easy to get lost in the many dungeons in the game. A lot of the puzzles or
paths forward were very unclear and I found myself multiple times having to
look up what I was supposed to do or where I was supposed to go next. The
graphics are mostly 2D spritework with a 3D overworld and some spell effects.
The overworld looked pretty bland which makes sense given the hardware it had
to work with, but everything else looked pretty good. The game also started
feeling like it was dragging towards the end, but that’s pretty typical for
games of this length that don’t stray from the formula too much.
In the grand scheme
of things, these are nitpicks in an overall great JRPG of the era. It was made
even more fun with the addition of a co-op partner. I imagine the game would’ve
been somewhat less enjoyable without voicing all the characters together and
having to micromanage the party members in combat. If you’re interested in
JRPGs and are not intimidated by the age or real-time combat, I would say this
game still holds up today and is an easy recommendation. Just try to play the
PS1 version with the fan translation patch as it is superior to the SNES and
GBA versions.

TV/Movie Recaps
Here is everything I watched last week:
·Futurama Season 10 Episodes 7-10 (all caught up,
show ongoing)
·The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury
·The Chronicles of Riddick
·Splinter Cell: Deathwatch Season 1 Episodes 1-4
(still watching, show ongoing)
I didn’t get to any anime like I originally planned to. I’ve
been so busy editing and stuff that it took me way longer than I expected to
catch up to the latest season of Futurama. I also didn’t realize that the
Splinter Cell show was coming out in full last week so I just started that too.
Please make a new game in this franchise Ubisoft, it’s been 12 years! Anyway,
Futurama had another enjoyable season. It still feels weird since I thought the
story wrapped up quite nicely a few seasons ago, but money talks so it keeps
going. Chronicles of Riddick was much more hardcore sci-fi than Pitch Black. The
first movie felt pretty grounded despite being on an alien planet and Riddick
being able to see in the dark. Even Dark Fury seemed pretty normal despite
taking place on an alien spaceship. This movie went all out with full planetary
invasions and a space religion centered around death to descend into the
Underverse. It felt much more ridiculous this time around. Still an enjoyable
movie, just a weird one.
Conclusion/Upcoming
My first game completion since July. It’s nice to get
another review out there. Doubly so since it was actually a good game. I’ll
miss the Tales of Phantasia characters, but I’m sure there are some good
characters in every Tales of game. The next Tales game we’re planning on
playing together is Tales of Eternia, known as Tales of Destiny II in the West.
It’s going to be a while before we get to it though. My co-op partner was
feeling a little burnt out by the end of it so we’re going to take turns picking
some smaller games to play next. I hope you all enjoyed following along as I
rambled about a 30-year-old RPG for the past six months. I really enjoyed my
time with it.
My plan for this week is to finish up Splinter Cell:
Deathwatch then start the second season of Gen V. If last week was any
indication, I won’t get to any other shows besides that. The next movie on my
list is to finish up the Riddick movies with the aptly named Riddick. There are
rumors that Vin Diesel wants to make a new movie in the series but for now,
that’s the last one. On the gaming side, I’m continuing my Expedition 33
playthrough. This is easily my GOTY so far, I’ve enjoyed practically everything
about it. Assuming my co-op partner is feeling up to it, the next game on our
list is going to be Monster Prom 2: Monster Camp. Quite a departure from what
we just played 😂 I got the second and third games in the
series from giveaways but never picked up 1 or 4. I don’t think they’re all
that connected though and play more like party games. It should be a fun time.
That’s all for now, thanks for reading!
That’s right, I finally redeemed Game Pass and started
playing games again! It’s only been like five months or so 😬
That means I’ll finally have some games to intersperse with Tales of
Phantasia and it’s not just a one-game blog. That also means my emulation
project is officially on hold. I was working on the Pokémon testing and made it
through FireRed, Snap, Let’s Go, Eevee!, SoulSilver, and GB2 (the
Japanese-exclusive card game). Not bad for just a day’s worth of testing.
Game Acquisitions
I ended up
redeeming the October Humble Choice. After an abysmal offering in September,
they bounced back with these games. I already had the enhanced edition of
System Shock so I ended up removing it from my backlog in favor of the remake.
System Shock 2 enhanced stayed in the backlog to play after this. I purchased
Haven for super cheap in the Steam Autumn Sale as well, it looks fun and I’m a
sucker for a good story. I also bought Fanatical’s Build Your Own Triple Pack because DOOMBLADE looks like it’s absolutely worth $1, and the other two
offerings were in an RPG bundle I missed a few months ago but cheaper. The
October Platinum Collection looks tempting too but I’m holding out hope the games will be in a cheaper
bundle later. You may be wondering why my total money spent doesn’t match the
price of the bundle I bought, and that’s because I managed to sell one of my
old games keys on Reddit. I paid $3.02 for the bundle mentioned earlier, but
also managed to sell Shogun Showdown for $3 to offset it. That brings my price
per game down to a negligible level.

One last time showing this off for the
foreseeable future. I decided I want to play through the whole Wild Arms
series. I swapped out the original for the Alter Code: F remake. I wonder what
made them decide to ditch the original combat system for the HEX-based one from
4 onwards…

Two games! It’s about time. I’m so
excited to finally start Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. I’ve had my eye on it
ever since it was announced and was happy to learn that it ended up being just
as good as it looked. I’m somehow already 16 hours into it and so far I’m loving it. I’ve befriended Esquie, fought my way through the yellow harvest, and am about to head to the Stone Wave Cliffs.Tales of Phantasia continues on as well of course. We made it all the way through Odin’s Tower and it wasn’t nearly as bad as the ice cave. Just ignore my horrible attempts at the optional boss with Odin himself. I’ve got us all set up to take on the spirit Origin next time. Check out my playthroughs! There’s too many parts of Expedition 33 scheduled to list here (the opposite problem to what I’ve had so far this year) so I’ve linked to the first part as well as the playlist so you can keep up on it. I’m once again quite proud of my thumbnail work here.
TV/Movie Recaps
Here is everything I watched this week:
·Alien: Earth Season 1 Episodes 5-8 (all caught
up, show ongoing)
·Futurama Season 10 Episodes 1-6 (still watching,
show ongoing)
·Pitch Black
Finished up what’s currently out of Alien: Earth. I’m
overall positive on it and recommend it to fans of the series. It stands on its
own for people who haven’t watched the movies too. Just know that there is some
gore so keep that in mind. Futurama was just more Futurama. A far cry from its
heyday but still fun enough. I started the Chronicles of Riddick series as
well! I’ve seen Pitch Black already but it had been a while so wanted a
refresher before diving into the series as a whole. Despite being 25 years old,
some of the visuals were still pretty cool, especially the eclipse scene.
A lot of sci-fi last week it seems, not that I’m complaining. It’s one of my
favorite genres for sure.
Conclusion/Upcoming
It’s so nice to finally be playing games again. I kept the
trickle of enthusiasm going with the continued Tales playthrough but now I’m
finally playing on my own time. My interest is waning on the whole recording,
editing, uploading, and blogging thing though. It takes up a lot of time, and it
feels weird trying to speak to nobody in particular. Maybe I’ll stick with just
focusing on the game with no commentary for solo plays, we’ll see. Let me know
how you feel about my blogging format too. Nobody has responded to my requests
for recommendations so far which confirms that nobody is reading the blog and I’m
probably just wasting my time on it.
My plan for this week is to watch the anime Blue Submarine
No. 6 and start Record of Lodoss War. I came across these shows through my
emulation research. Blue Submarine No. 6 got a Japan-exclusive game for the
Dreamcast while Record of Lodoss War got games for both the SNES and Dreamcast.
My original plan was to watch the shows right before playing their game
counterparts, but my inability to do the same with Ghost in the Shell and
Chronicles of Riddick recently made me realize that it’s probably not important
enough to do that since they’re largely separate experiences. There are still
some games in my backlog like .hack and Final Fantasy XV where the stories of
the shows and games are more interweaved so I’ll stick to my plan with those.
I’ll also be continuing my Chronicles of Riddick movie watch with Dark Fury and
the aptly named “The Chronicles of Riddick.” I have tomorrow off work so my
friend and I are hanging out for most of the day. Tales of Phantasia will
definitely be played, and we should make a good amount of progress. The end is
almost in sight! I’ll be continuing Expedition 33 as well, making my way
through Act 1. That’s all for now, thanks for reading!
No, no, not trading in the game, trading IN the game. Glad I
could clear that up for you.
Game Acquisitions
Another big
purchase here with Star Wars: Outlaws as mentioned in my September monthly
post. I know it didn’t have a very warm reception, but I’m a diehard Star Wars
fan and it looks fun to me. Very light week otherwise for acquisitions.
# of Games: 4
Total Money Spent: $17.82
Price/Game: $4.46
I might be the only person who looked at
Rygar: The Legendary Adventure for the PS2 and went “that looks cool, but I’ll
have to play the original game for the NES first.” My series completion mindset
knows no bounds it seems. It actually seemed like it wasn’t a bad game, just
notoriously difficult as games tended to be back then. It’s OK, I have save
states and rewind to help me through it. I’ve also got the entirety of the
Shadow Hearts and Valkyrie Profile games tested and ready to go. I’ve never
heard of Shadow Hearts before, but Valkyrie Profile has a solid reputation. I
also got all the Pokémon games downloaded for the upcoming testing for that
series. I’m planning on playing all the games from my play order collection for that one, and it’ll be a doozy for sure. I’ve never actually played a
mainline Pokémon game before. I only dabbled in Stadium minigames and am still
an avid Pokémon Go player. I’m excited to see what the actual series is all
about.
It's official, I had to stitch two pictures from Playnite to get them all to fit. That marks over 200 games tested so far! And I'm only just getting started it seems 😅
Game Recaps
I actually got two Phantasia sessions in,
one co-op and one solo. This won’t be a habit though; I just wanted to clean up
some shopping stuff without my co-op partner sitting there doing nothing. Despite
the increased play time, we didn’t accomplish too much. It was mostly exploring
the couple of towns we hadn’t been to yet (namely Early, the Twilit Town) that we probably weren’t supposed to go to. We also got lost in the Treant Forest for a while, but at least now we know where we’re supposed to go next after we finish up the volcano area. Check out the playthrough!
TV/Movie Recaps
Here is everything I watched this week:
·Marvel Zombies Season 1 Episodes 3-4 (complete)
·Alien: Earth Season 1 Episodes 1-4 (still watching,
show ongoing)
·Happy Gilmore 2
A light week for acquisitions and a light week for TV too it
seems. What did I even do last week? Anyway, shows and movies were just OK this
week, not bad but not great. Zombies ended on a cliffhanger which may never be
resolved, Alien: Earth seems alright so far but nothing outstanding (how dare they kill a cat though, that’s always unforgivable), and Happy Gilmore 2 was so filled with
references that it didn’t feel like it wanted to be its own movie. Hopefully
this week is better.
Conclusion/Upcoming
As I feared, Game Pass and Microsoft Rewards went through a
total revamp last week. Now you can’t redeem for Game Pass directly and the
exchange rate is way worse because not only did the price go up but now you can
only redeem for Xbox gift cards which has a way worse exchange rate. I don’t
think it’s possible to earn enough points to keep the subscription going
indefinitely anymore, it seems they closed as many loopholes as they possibly
could. I did manage to redeem four months’ worth before the switch though.
Still haven’t gotten around to redeeming it though, just continuing the
emulation testing in the meantime. I was at 369 lines left in my file last week
and am sitting at 361 now. Next up is the Pokémon
collection though which is only one line and will likely take over a week to
test on its own, so it won’t look like I’ve made any progress. I am planning on
toiling around in the background though.
This week will consist of finishing up
Alien: Earth and at least starting Futurama. If I manage to finish both of those,
I’ll move on to one of my obscure anime I’ve had sitting on my PC for a while.
The next movie coming up is Pitch Black, the start of the Chronicles of Riddick
franchise. I watched it like a decade ago, but it’ll be nice to get a refresher
before diving into the series proper. Dunno if I’m getting more Tales of
Phantasia time in, I certainly hope so. If not this week, then definitely next
week while I’m off for the holiday. That’s all for now, thanks for reading!
I can’t believe we’re already 3/4ths of the way
through the year already. That means I’ve kept this weekly blog thing going for
nine whole months! It also means I’ve got some more quarterly stats for you
all. Fun times!
Game Acquisitions
About the
average number of acquisitions for me, with my highest monthly spend as you’ll
see in my YTD graphs below. This is also my first month where the amount of
money spent exceeded the number of games acquired. I hope that doesn’t become a
trend. My Steam family picked up quite a few games as well that I can now play
for free. Alan Wake II and Star Wars Outlaws were the big purchases, but I’m
super excited for Hades as well. Those are my highlights for September.
# of Games: 41
Total Money Spent: $59.71
Price/Game: $1.46
The emulation testing continues to churn.
A lot of progress made here, but there are still hundreds more games to get
through. If it weren’t for my co-op partner and my upcoming Game Pass
subscription, I wouldn’t be getting any game time in. Still, there’s a ton of
awesome games here, and I will finish up the testing eventually. I just might need
a break from this for a while. Expedition 33 is calling my name.
Game Recaps
Only one game played in September with
Tales of Phantasia. I haven’t played a single-player game since May. Hopefully
I will fix that soon with Game Pass. We put several hours into Phantasia and
made tons of progress. We finally made it out of the past and into the future, meeting up with our old companion from the beginning of the game along the way. We also now have flying machines that let us travel anywhere in the world and have managed to defeat the Fenrir Beast to get the first piece we need to unlock the final dungeon. Check out the playlist of our playthrough!
TV/Movie Recaps
Here is everything I watched last month:
·Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld Season 1
Episodes 4-6 (complete)
·Raised by Wolves Season 1 Episode 1-Season 2
Episode 8 (complete)
·My Little Pony: Make Your Mark Season 4 Episodes
1-4 (complete)
·Pokémon Concierge Season 1 Episodes 1-8
(complete)
·LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy Season 2
Episodes 1-4 (complete)
·Marvel’s Zombies Season 1 Episodes 1-4
(complete)
·Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2
·Jurassic World Rebirth
·Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
·Happy Gilmore
A lot of shows completed last month, and I didn’t dislike
any of them. Going purely by enjoyment, Pokémon Concierge was absolutely my
favorite watch. It was just so adorable! I haven’t watched a Pokémon show since
I was a kid, and it was nice seeing them in a relaxing setting instead of
battling. Just a nice slice-of-life anime, highly recommend. I can’t believe
the Harry Potter finale was in September, it feels like forever ago.
YTD Stats
Back again with my year-to-date stats now that we’ve
finished up the third quarter. Please note that the weekly graphs reflect the
time period 12/29/24-09/27/25. Let’s start with the hours played per week and
month graphs.
As you can see, I’m still having weeks where I don’t play
anything (isn’t adulting fun!?), but at least my gaming in September was higher
than the past few months. I’m up to 157 hours and 25 minutes of gaming this
year, which is definitely on the low side if you check my HLTB completions.
Next up are the money spent vs. games acquired graphs. Please note that my
emulated games are not reflected here so the actual number of backlog additions
is much higher.
September was another “big” spend month for me, with Alan
Wake II Deluxe and Star Wars Outlaws making up 60% of that total. Still a
paltry amount of money to spend on a hobby in my opinion. So far this year,
I’ve now spent $194.79 on games and gotten 430 total games out of it. Crazy
value there. I’m glad I’m able to see these stats now and convince myself that
I’m not overspending on games. That was one of my primary goals of starting
this blog and now I know! Now I can work on not sweating my game purchases too
much.
Conclusion/Upcoming
Three quarters down, only one more to go to finish up the
year. This blog has been quite a journey so far, and it is way more work than I
was expecting. I’m not sure if I’m getting enough fulfillment and engagement to
keep it going after my annual top 10 post at the end of the year, it’s just
taking up a lot of time that could be spent gaming. Maybe I could reduce the
frequency to just once a month and/or cutting back on some sections. Let me
know what you think.
Coming up in October, I’m planning on watching Alien: Earth,
Futurama, Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, and Gen V for TV shows. That should get me
through the month. If not, I’ve got a couple shows on the backburner I can get
to. I really hope Splinter Cell: Deathwatch leads to a new game at some point;
it’s been 12 years since the last one. Get on it Ubisoft! For movies, I’ve got
Happy Gilmore 2 and the Chronicles of Riddick series. I might sneak in a horror
movie for Halloween too, we’ll see. Gaming wise, more Tales of Phantasia is
coming up. We probably won’t beat the game in October so I’m not looking further
ahead than that. If I decide to redeem Game Pass, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
will be my next single-player game. I want to play it so badly! That’s all for
now, thanks for reading!
Backlog total: 3,612 (+107) <- That’s the emulation
testing kicking in right there.
